”And you’re pregnant again?!” He’s laughing, shaking his head as he places his hands on top of hers. “Who’d have thought the old guy had it in him? How are you?”
”Well I always wanted a tribe.” Maria said returning his grin. ”Come on you gotta admit that the other two are adorable.” Maria added. ”Yes you do they miss their uncle James, Willa’s so big and bossy now. Takes after her daddy though and you she’s already told me several times that she’s heading into starfleet, you should see her with all those stuffed toys bossing them around. James is very much like me, give him a good book and Traveller as a pillow and you lose him for hours.” Maria said with a smile. ”As for this one.” She said rubbing the bump. ”No idea yet. I can feel them moving though.”
”I want to hear about your mission though, we need a coffee and don’t give me nothing too exotic. Remember I’m married to Pike I’ve seen reports from your past missions and I don’t believe you for a second.” Maria said raising an eyebrow. ”Yeah no one died but I bet there were a few near misses, don’t worry I won’t be telling tales!”
“You guys are gonna repopulate Starfleet if you keep it up.” There’s a teasing smile and he’s huffing a laugh. “Yeah they are. God they must be so big now.” It still makes his chest pound that little faster to know that there’s two kids out there that see him as their uncle, hell one is named after him and isn’t that something. Joining Starfleet, it’s like he’s found himself a family, a group of people that love him and it doesn’t matter if he loses, fails. They just… It’s the first unconditional love he’s ever felt and it’s terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. Pike, Maria. They’ve accepted him as their own and it’s wonderful. He picks up on a word she uses, not ‘it’ or 'him’ or 'her’ but ’they’. “You’re having another– Wait, another multiple birth?”
“Fine. You’re bossy, you sure Willa’s not like you?” He’s grinning, offering an arm for her to loop hers through. “You want to sit down, we’ll get some coffee and– you still bake right? I’ve missed your baking – and I’ll tell you the great story of how… how we got slightly lost in space."
